A Conversation About the Rule of Law, Fairness, Equality, and Respect

The Becker Law Firm was honored to welcome Ohio Supreme Court Justice Jennifer Brunner and retired Ohio Supreme Court Justice Michael P. Donnelly for an evening of conversation with our attorneys and friends about the principles that support Ohio’s legal system.

Having a sitting justice of the Supreme Court of Ohio and a former justice speak directly with lawyers in an informal setting was a meaningful opportunity. The evening provided an opportunity for a broader conversation about the rule of law and the principles that support confidence in Ohio’s judicial system, including judicial integrity, fairness, and respect for the role of the courts.

Justice Brunner has served on Ohio’s highest court since January 2021. Before joining the Supreme Court of Ohio, she served as Ohio’s Secretary of State and as a judge on the Tenth District Court of Appeals. Her experience across several levels of public service brought an especially thoughtful perspective to the conversation.

Justice Donnelly served on the Supreme Court of Ohio from 2019 through 2024, following 14 years on the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas. His longstanding experience in Ohio’s courts and work surrounding procedural fairness, professionalism, and public confidence in the judicial system brought another valuable perspective to the evening.

The Importance of Judicial Independence

The evening also provided an opportunity to reflect on the importance of an independent judiciary and the distinct role courts play in our system of government. In a time when public debate can often become polarized, conversations about the rule of law and the role of the judiciary are especially meaningful.

An independent judiciary plays an essential role in maintaining public confidence in the legal system. Courts must be able to apply the law fairly, consider the facts of each case, and uphold the principles that ensure every person has meaningful access to justice.

For lawyers and members of the community alike, the conversation was a timely reminder that the rule of law depends on judges who approach their work with integrity, fairness, equality, and respect. Those values help ensure that Ohioans can trust the courts to provide a neutral forum when legal rights, personal futures, and difficult questions are at stake.

The evening also underscored the importance of fairness, equality, and respect in the justice system. These principles should apply to every person, regardless of their background, resources, political views, or the circumstances that bring them before a court.
